The Office of Residential life has current open professional staff positions of Residential College/ Community Director available this year.  These primary professional staff members are responsible for enhancing the quality of life for residential students through the development of programs and activities which promote learning and foster a strong sense of community.  They are key members of the Residential Life team, and as such, also participate in departmental planning, evaluation, and administration.  The Residential College and Community Directors are 12-month, full-time, live-in staff with significant opportunities to be involved in both departmental and University-wide committees and initiatives.  Residential Colleges and Apartment Communities are each unique and different and has its own amenities and programs.  Our residential communities include traditional Residential Colleges with first year students and upper-class students, all first year student areas, and all upper-class areas, including out University apartments both on and off campus.

RESIDENCE HALL DIRECTOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The programmatic mission of Residential Living is to support the academic mission of the University within the residence hall setting.  This is accomplished through academic, student development and community development programming.

The student development program is divided into the six dimensions of wellness:  social, career, spiritual, physical, intellectual and emotional.  Community development is promoted by encouraging residents to become active participants in responsible decision-making within their living environment.

The Residence Hall Director's primary responsibilities are the welfare and development of the students within the residence hall.  To promote these, the Director functions as:

                   * Supervisor/Advisor

                            -    select, train, supervise and evaluate Assistant to the Director for Administration (AD)

                            -    select, train, supervise and evaluate Community Advisor staff (CA)

-       supervise the Academic Resource Coordinator(s) (ARCs)

                            -    coordinate the development of meaningful goals, programs and policies for the hall

                            -    advise Hall Government and other student volunteer groups

                   * Educational Specialist

                            -    support the academic mission of the university by helping establish Learning Communities in the residence halls (ARC Program and Freshman Interest Group Program)

                            -    assist Academic Resource Coordinator(s) (ARCs) in the assessment of residents’ academic needs

                            -    interact regularly with Faculty Mentor, and facilitate student/faculty interactions

                            -    promote an environment conducive to academic success

                            -    counsel students having personal, academic, lifestyle and career concerns when appropriate

                   * Community Development Specialist

                            -    encourage residents' active participation in house governance

                            -    encourage students to assume responsibility for decisions affecting their community

                            -    communicate, explain and clarify campus  and hall policies

                            -    initiate appropriate student conduct action when necessary

                            -    maintain a secure, satisfying physical environment

                            -    promote an environment conducive to academic success

                   * Administrator

                            -    direct overall operation of the residence hall

                            -    monitor the hall budgets, monitor training, develop budget

                            -    maintain regular communications or correspondence with administrative services, custodial and maintenance functions, food service, campus activities and protective services

                            -    serve on committees/task forces

                            -    provide reports, including four Quarterly Reports

Although the Hall Director's primary activities are focused on the hall itself, there is considerable emphasis on personal development.  Each Hall Director will be involved in a collateral assignment (not to exceed eight hours per week) and departmental committee.

The RLC is responsible for one or more residential communities with populations of approximately 250-650 students. The primary function of this position is to direct and oversee the operations of the residence hall(s) including: staffing and supervision of 1-2 Assistant Residence Life Coordinators (Graduate Assistants) and 6-13 Resident Assistants; student development; training; advising student groups; administrative and managerial responsibilities; facilities management; and professional development. The RLC assesses, contributes to, and oversees the implementation and enhancement of student learning outside of the classroom through a wide range of programmatic opportunities and serves as the primary leader within their communities for MAP-Works implementation, student conduct proceedings, and occupancy management. RLCs also serve on departmental and university committees.  

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Compiling various reports, maintaining records, overseeing check ins, check outs, and room changes. Maintaining key inventory, ordering replacement keys, issuing and receiving keys.Working with maintenance and housekeeping, processing work orders, and inspecting buildings.

• Receiving and distributing campus mail and general information, designing and maintaining hall specific forms. Working with break housing, coordinating building closings and openings. Performing summer duties including summer school, conferences, special projects, attending all training sessions, and preparing hall for opening.

• Participating in departmental and university committees, task forces, and other professional development activities.

• Advising and training the Hall Governing Board (HGB), attending weekly meetings and sponsored activities. Managing RLC program account and hall Social and Educational (S&E) funds.

• Interacting with students on a regular basis, providing information and assistance concerning academic issues, peer conflicts, personal problems, etc., being accessible and visible to students. Providing programs determined by students’ needs and opinions, assisting RAs in implementing the first six-weeks programming model, working with staff and HGB programs.

• Participating in the recruitment, selection, training, supervision and evaluation of the Assistant Residence Life Coordinator (ARLC), Resident Assistants (RA), Community Assistants (CA), Door Assistants (DA), and student office workers.

• Working with the Departmental Initiatives Team and academic colleges to assure all residents’ academic needs are being met.

• Educating, training, advising, and assisting residents, HGB members, and staff concerning all policies and rules, advising student judicial board, corresponding with complainants and respondents to determine hearing routes.

• Serve in twenty-four hour, year round, on call rotation including participating in weekend and holiday coverage, and being able to respond to any situations that may arise during those time offering immediate support and resources to students and staff involved. 

• Teach a community leadership class through the College of Education to provide positive, meaningful, learning experiences for students.

Qualifications: Requires a Master's degree in student personnel or related area.  Prefer experience working with on-campus residential living. The successful candidate will have skills in selecting, supervising, and training student staff; advising student groups; the ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and to interact with a diverse staff; flexibility; excellent oral and written communication skills; familiarity with student housing operations; good time management skills and the ability to work with interruptions.   The incumbent is required to live on premises and have the ability to respond to various resident situations and to attend evening and weekend meetings and activities.

Salary and Benefits:  The starting salary is $35,000 per year and includes a seven day, 20-meals per week plan during the academic calendar (excluding recess periods).   The duties of this position require live-in status.  An on-campus, furnished apartment with washer and dryer, cable television, internet, and university provided work cell phone are provided.

• Select, train, supervise and evaluate graduate assistants and hourly student employees to ensure successful programs for student residents.  Follows all affirmative action, human resources, and university policies and procedures as prescribed by departmental, state, and federal requirements.  Coordinates with graduate assistants and hourly student employees to provide programming activities; education, training, advising, and assisting residents, student group members, and staff regarding policies and rules.  Participate in annual student and graduate staff selection.

• Collaborate with University and departmental staff to ensure student needs are met. Works closely with Assistant Director for Departmental Initiatives and University academic affairs staff as well as staff from academic colleges to ensure the academic needs of residents are met.  Maintain positive relationships with the University and Manhattan community, campus leadership, students, faculty, staff, parents and guests.  Perform other duties to include, but not limited to, participation on departmental and university committees, task forces, professional development activities and special projects.
